The Sisters is the twelfth episode of the second season of The Golden Girls, and the thirty-seventh episode overall. Directed by Terry Hughes, and written by Christopher Lloyd, it premiered on NBC-TV on January 3rd, 1987.
Dorothy arranges for Sophia's sister, Angela, to fly from Sicily to Miami as a surprise gift for Sophia's birthday, not realizing that Sophia and Angela have been feuding for decades, over what turns out to be a big misunderstanding.
Additionally, Sophia and Angela each tell a story about their falling out at Francesca Reguso's Christmas party in 1955. Angela says that when her husband Carmine showed up in a Santa suit, Sophia ran over to him and kissed him so hard that she practically sucked the beard off his face. She pulled Sophia into the closet and accused her of betraying her. Sophia said she thought Cunio the Bookmaker was in the Santa suit, and Angela accused her of lying. The sisters had a big fight, each denied the accusations, and they refused to speak to one another again.
Sophia says that while she was looking for a seltzer to wash down Frencesca's manicotti with, Salvadore de Milo pulled her into the closet and began kissing her. Being a respectable married woman, Sophia shoved him away after copping a few good feels and ran to tell Angela what had happened. The next thing she knew, everyone at the party knew what had happened. Sophia pulled Angela into a closet and accused her of betraying her. The sisters had a big fight, each denied the accusations, and they refused to speak to one another again.
Tales from the Old South[]
Blanche tells the ladies about the time in high school that she competed against her sister Charmaine for cheer captain. They had a contest in front of the entire school, and Charmaine blew it out of the water. Blanche did some cartwheels and only fell once, did a handstand and almost got her balance, and dropped my baton four times. Afterwards, Blanche was unanimously voted captain of the cheerleading squad. Underneath her cheer uniform, she was wearing black French lace panties with a French word on her backside.

The woman in a black floral dress at Sophia's birthday party is the same woman who Sophia's boyfriend, Tony, cheats on her with in "Long Day's Journey Into Marinara".[2]

When the girls talk in the kitchen, the amount of chocolate cake on the plate changes between shots.
When Blanche tells the others about her cheerleading contest against her sister, she talks about twirling batons as well as cheerleader moves. Cheerleaders to not twirl batons, but majorettes do.
