Second Motherhood is the nineteenth episode of the first season of The Golden Girls and the nineteenth episode overall. Directed by Gary Shimokawa and written by Christopher Lloyd. it premiered on NBC-TV on February 15th, 1986.
Blanche accepts a marriage proposal from her wealthy businessman boyfriend, but is conflicted when she learns he has two young children who come second to his work. Dorothy and Rose renovate the bathroom, despite Sophia's insistence that they hire a sexist plumber for help.
Rose mentions that they did all their own plumbing on the farm.
Rose tells the ladies about the Mother's Days they would have on the farm. The kids would wake her up by rubbing their cat, Mr. McTavish, against her ear, and bring her Belgian waffles and buttermilk in bed. Then they would paint faces on their socks and perform a puppet show called Elf Kingdom.
Depending on landlord-tenant laws in Florida before February 1986, Blanche most likely bears the ultimate financial responsibility of repairing the bathroom since she is the landlord and homeowner, so they would have no incentive to chip in on the cost or the labor or getting estimates on either. However, they are friends and have been seen to share expenses in common in other episodes.
Production[]
The first plumber, played by Terry Wills, also appears in "Three On A Couch" as Carl.[2]
Alan Blumenfeld, who plays Lou, also appears in "A Piece of Cake" as Mr. Ha-Ha.[3]
Goofs[]
Dorothy complains to Rose that when she is in her bedroom, her head is directly behind the wall that Rose is banging on. According to the layout of the house, Dorothy's room should be on the opposite side of the hallway from the bathroom.
The first time Blanche goes on Richard's private plane, he brings out a bottle of champagne. It sounds like he fills three glasses full of champagne, but only two full glasses are shown in the end.
In the previous episode, Blanche tells the other girls that she has a huge fear of flying and that she had never gotten over it.[4] Yet in this episode, Blanche goes on Richard's private plane without any trouble or any mention of her fear. However, she could have gotten over her fear of flying sometime between episodes.
Rose mentions that they did all their own plumbing on the farm, but in another episode, she says she didn't have plumbing until she was eighteen.
