Patrick Vaughn is a major one-off character in The Golden Girls. A famous television actor, Patrick comes to Miami to participate in a play at the community theatre.
Patrick made his only appearance in the Season 2 episode "The Actor". He is portrayed by Lloyd Bochner.
Personality and Characteristics[]
On the surface, Patrick is a polite and refined man who has a deep passion for the theatre. He is quite verbose and is a quick thinker, able to think up various scenarios on the spot and adapt to unforeseen changes.
However, Patrick is not as virtuous as he makes himself out to be -- he is a shameless cheater who had no problem seeing over twenty women at once and playing them off of each other. He is aware of how famous he is, and he used his acting skills to his advantage in order to keep each of his girlfriends satisfied and unaware that he was seeing other women. When he was caught, he tried to justify his behavior by pointing out that all of the women had a good time with him, so they shouldn't be as upset with him as they had been.
Biography[]
Background[]
Over thirty years ago, Patrick began his acting career. He became moderately successful, acting in numerous stage plays and television shows. He had his fair share of women and men asking him out, and he used his acting abilities to play various lovers off of one another.[1]
He may have had a wife that he was divorcing, but this could have been another lie that he conjured up to keep his various girlfriends quiet.
The Actor[]
Patrick paid a visit to Miami for a couple of acting jobs -- a tangerine in a television commercial, and Biff, the male lead of a play at the local community theatre. Upon his arrival at the theatre, Patrick meets Dorothy Zbornak, Rose Nylund and Blanche Devereaux, all of whom are extremely taken with him and try to make attempts to be alone with him. Patrick can't stay as he has to go and get to his commercial, so he wishes the ladies luck in auditioning for the female lead and leaves.[1]
At the auditions, Patrick is seen helping Dorothy and Blanche with their auditions before announcing that Phyllis Hammerow will be the leading lady and Ronald Bromberg will be playing the part of the sheriff, reducing everyone else to non-speaking townspeople. On Blanche's way out, Patrick asked her to dinner that night, asking her to keep quiet about it because he was going through a divorce and didn't want the press to get ahold of it. Unknown to Blanche, Patrick would ask Rose, Dorothy, Phyllis, and every other female cast member out to dinner with the same excuse. For the next two weeks, Patrick would play the entire female cast off of one another, having a brief scare when he discovered that three of his girlfriends were roommates. Whenever a woman wanted to tell the world about their relationship, Patrick promised them that when the time was right, he would announce their love by renting a plane and writing it in the sky.[1]
On the play's opening night, the play went as planned aside from Dorothy filling in for the part of the sheriff -- but Blanche and Rose discovered that Patrick had been seeing the two of them as well as Phyllis Hammerow. An enraged Blanche outed Patrick as a cheater in front of the entire cast and the audience of the play, causing the play to come to a halt as the women demanded justice. Patrick tried to save his skin by asking everyone if they had a good time with him, but the women were unmoved and kicked him out of the play.[1]
After the play, Dorothy, Rose and Blanche returned home and disparaged Patrick, humiliated over how they behaved like schoolgirls and fell for him so quickly. Nevertheless, they each admitted that they had fun with Patrick, and he made them feel good about themselves.[1]

Trivia[]
- Patrick Vaughn's actor, Lloyd Bochner, would later appear in Season 4's "Rites of Spring" as Eduardo.[2]
- Patrick is similar to Fidel Santiago,[3] in that both of them were in love triangles with multiple Golden Girls and had multiple girlfriends besides the ladies they were dating. However, Fidel was at least somewhat truthful about his love life while Patrick tried to keep everything secret.
