One Flew Out of the Cuckoo's Nest, Part 1 is the twenty-fifth episode of the seventh season of The Golden Girls and the one-hundred and seventy-ninth episode overall. Directed by Peter D. Beyt and written by Don Seigel and Jerry Perzigian, it premiered on NBC-TV on May 9th, 1992. When Blanche's Uncle Lucas visits, Blanche sets him up with Dorothy in order to keep a date with her newest beau. After learning nether of them are as interested in the other as they were led to believe -- and of the unflattering descriptions of Dorothy in Blanche's letters -- Dorothy and Lucas decided to get even by pretending to be in love. However, they end up falling in love for real, leading Lucas to propose to Dorothy.

Part One[]

Blanche gets the news that her Uncle Lucas is arriving at Miami, but she has planned a date with someone, so she sets him up with a date with Dorothy to pass off hosting him. Meeting at a restaurant, Dorothy and Lucas start off uneasy, but quickly realize that Blanche lied to both of them about the other being interested in each other. The two plot to get back at Blanche by pretending to have fallen in love with each other in front of her. The next day, Lucas fakes a proposal to Dorothy in front of the girls, shocking them all.

The revenge works well as Blanche grows more upset at the thought of Dorothy, a "Yankee," inheriting ownership of her childhood southern summer home Hollingsworth Manor if she marries Lucas and moves there with Sophia. Rose reveals her plans to move back to St. Olaf to live with her daughter Kirsten due to everyone leaving, and sends Blanche over the edge upset that everyone is leaving her behind. Dorothy and Lucas agree the joke has gone too far and will fake breaking up in front of Blanche, but the two tenderly admit they enjoyed their time together. Blanche secretly overhears their conversation, and before Dorothy and Lucas can share a genuine kiss, they are interrupted. Blanche then takes the opportunity to return and apologize for her overreaction, and gives her blessing to Dorothy and Lucas' relationship. Lucas then surprises everyone by turning and proposing to Dorothy "for real" this time, and Dorothy accepts.[1]
