Man of the Year is the nineteenth episode of the first season of Empty Nest and the nineteenth episode overall. Directed by Hal Cooper and written by Mady Julian, it premiered on NBC-TV on March 4th, 1989.
When Harry is named Man of the Year at his former medical school, his estranged father Stanfield comes to town for the ceremony. The night of the ceremony, Carol overhears a conversation between Stanfield and his friend and believes that he is dying. Harry gets upset when he learns that his father didn't think he could make it as a doctor.
Harold Gould, who plays Stanfield Weston, also portrays Miles Webber on The Golden Girls. At the time of the episode airing, Gould was also nine years younger than Richard Mulligan.
Kat Sawyer, who plays Elna, is credited as "Kat Sawyer-Young".
