Gil Kessler, formerly Anna Maria Bonnaduci, is a one-time character in The Golden Girls. An unremarkable councilman in Miami, Gil was running for reelection and purported the assumption that he'd had an affair with Blanche Devereaux as it was getting him the attention his campaign needed. At Blanche's insistence, however, he later admitted that the assumptions were false. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that he is a transgender man and was once a "mild-mannered house wife" named Anna Maria Bonaducci who underwent gender reassignment surgery.

He is portrayed by John Schuck.

Biography[]

Anna Maria Bonaducci sometime in the early 1940s. Growing up, Anna was often overlooked by her peers, and would bring a yearbook to school to prove that she was not new. Anna would later marry and settle into the quiet life of homemaker, taking on part-time work as a stenographer. Despite a timid disposition that she could never quite shake, Anna had great aspirations. By 1968, following a presumed divorce, Anna underwent gender reassignment surgery and officially changed her name to Gil Kessler. With this new identity came a second marriage, though his wife is unknown, and entrance into local politics in Miami, Florida.

When Blanche is photographed entering Gil Kessler's home, the media purports that Kessler and Blanche had an affair. Kessler goes along with the media's claims, which Blanche denies. While none of the other character initially believe Blanche, eventually Blanche convinces Gil Kessler to come clean and admit that no affair went on.[1]
