Foreign Exchange is the twenty-fourth episode of the fourth season of The Golden Girls and the one-hundredth episode overall. Directed by Terry Hughes and written by Harriet B. Hpelberg and Susan Helberg, it premiered on NBC-TV on May 6th, 1989.

Summary[]

Sophia's old friends come to Miami from Sicily, Italy for a visit and have shocking news for Dorothy: they believe she is their daughter, switched at birth with the daughter they raised. Meanwhile, Blanche and Rose take "dirty dancing" lessons; uncharacteristically, Blanche is not any good at it, while Rose is a quick study.

Plot[]

This episode is when friends of Sophia come and then a rumor occurs. Apparently, it is thought the two were switched at birth, and it puts a strain on Sophia and Dorothy's relationship. Ultimately, it results in Dorothy and Sophia getting a blood test to find out the truth. In the end, during a tender moment between the two, which prompts Sophia to rip up the results of the blood test, both families decide that no matter whose daughter is whose they will love the girls like always.

Meanwhile, Blanche and Rose participate in dirty dancing lessons, to which Blanche is initially ecstatic to do but Rose is initially hesitant after learning what's involved. The first lesson unfortunately doesn't go so well for Blanche who isn't as talented as she thought she would be while Rose is mentioned to be a natural and quick learner. Further lessons result in Blanche becoming upset as she continues to do badly while Rose does the exact opposite, leading Rose to voice her doubts about Blanche's past exploits. Upset, Blanche takes Rose as her dancing partner and does a great performance of dirty dancing that gets her out of her funk.[1]
