Fatal Attraction is the fourth episode of the first season of Empty Nest and the fourth episode overall. Directed by Hal Cooper and written by Susan Harris, it premiered on NBC-TV on November 5th, 1988.
Neighbor Blanche thinks she is in love with Harry and comes on strong when showing her affection. When an old friend of the family dies from an illness, Carol decides to move in and take care of her father.
Laverne tells Harry about a similar problem between Maybelle and Elk -- a cow and an elk, respectively. Maybelle belonged to Abner Caldwell, who claimed he was related to Erskine Caldwell. Laverne never believed it was true, but she did know he was related to Chick Caldwell, the chicken farmer. At any rate, Elk fell in love with Maybelle, but Maybelle couldn't care less. Elk tried everything to get to Maybelle -- he broke down the farm's fence, he knocked over trees, and even broke into the barn trying to get to Maybelle. Eventually, Abner shot Elk with a tranquilizer and shipped him off to Yellowstone National Park.
This episode concludes a crossover with The Golden Girls that began in "Yokel Hero". In the episode, Harry pops over to drop off the ladies' mail, and it is stated that Harry is now "fair game" to date since it has been eighteen months since his wife died.[2]
Cultural references[]
The episode's title is a reference to the 1987 film Fatal Attraction. Charley mentions the film when the group is talking about women obsessed with their lovers.
Goofs[]
Charley says the only funeral he ever went to was his father's, but his father is very much alive a few seasons later.[3]
