Golden Girls Wiki

Charles Levin (March 12, 1949 - June 28, 2019) was an American actor[1] who appeared in television, movies and on stage. He was best known for the role of Elliot Novak on the series Alice having become a regular in the show's 9th season and the recurring role of Eddie Gregg on Hill Street Blues from 1982 to 1986.

Life and career[]

He was also known for having played the mohel on "The Bris" episode of Seinfeld and Coco Davis, the gay cook, on the pilot episode of The Golden Girls. His part was dropped in favor of making the character of Sophia Petrillo played by Estelle Getty a cast regular. (Many of her snassy one-liners were originally written for Coco.)

He appeared as a guest star on many television shows including Family Ties, Tales from the Darkside, The Twilight Zone, The Facts of Life, Falcon Crest (as Arthur Habermann), Punky Brewster (as Officer Bob), Thirtysomething, Night Court, L.A. Law (as Robert Caporale), Designing Women, Murphy Brown, NYPD Blue, and Law & Order. Charles appears in the pilot episode of The Golden Girls as Coco Davis, the gay cook for the women, whose part was dropped from the series in favor of further development of the Sophia Petrillo character, which was played by Estelle Getty, whereas many of the funny, acerbic, witty lines which would have been meant for the Coco part would now be rewritten and fall upon the Sophia character.
