Blind Ambitions is the twenty-third episode of the first season of The Golden Girls and the twenty-third episode overall. Directed by Terry Hughes and written by Bob Colleary, it premiered on NBC-TV on March 29th, 1986.
Rose's blind sister Lily comes to visit from Chicago and begs Rose to move in with her and take care of her. The girls hold a garage sale to raise money for a new television, but find they cannot part with what they are selling.
Plot[]
Rose's sister Lily from Chicago is in town on a visit, she has recently lost her sight, which she claims hasn't affected her, she had a full life beforehand and found the school for the blind boring. Sophia then talks about their TV set needs replacing so they have the idea to throw a yard sale.
However Lily's blindness nearly puts her in danger starting a fire in the kitchen, which the girls save her, Rose goes to talk to her, she lets the mask slip, she's scare of life and wants Rose to take care of her in Chicago. Rose was planning to go but is having doubts so Sophia talks about herself when she had the stroke, she was unable to do anything, but Dorothy nagged her until she did her therapy and she recovered so Rose changes her mind.
The Yard Sale is a failure the girls are unwilling to give up items that have meaning for them, so they decide to buy the TV on Credit and pay it off weekly. Lily asks Rose for help but she tells her that she can't give up and so Lily returns to Chicago angrily. A couple of weeks later she invites Rose to Chicago, surprising her at the airport with her seeing-eye dog Becky, she reveals she returned to the Blind School and has learnt a lot more thanks to Rose's motivation, she thanks her and shows the progress by describing the layout of the airport.[1]
In the previous episode, a place called Mel's Diner is mentioned. Polly Holliday, Lily's actress, is famous for her work on the sitcom Alice, as Flo the waitress, who works at Mel's Diner.
