Blanche's Little Girl is the fourteenth episode of the third season of The Golden Girls, and the sixty-fifth episode overall. Directed by Terry Hughes and written by Terry Grossman and Kathy Speer, the episode premiered on NBC-TV on January 9th, 1988.
Blanche wants to defend her overweight daughter, whose boyfriend speaks to her abusively, but she is afraid that if she does, her daughter will resent her interference and they will again be estranged. Meanwhile, Sophia, now working at a fast-food restaurant, organizes a strike against her tyrannical boss: a preteen boy.
Plot[]
Blanche hasn't seen her daughter Rebecca for four years, since she moved to Paris to become a model, so she and the others are caught off guard when Becky shows up having gained a considerable amount of weight, since Blanche last saw her. In addition, she has a boyfriend who does nothing but insult her. Eventually, Blanche tries to talk to Rebecca about it, but Rebecca gets angry and leaves. She later returns and tells Blanche she has dumped Jeremy.
Meanwhile, Sophia and two other older female co-workers invite their 16-year-old "shark" of a manager at Pecos Pete's Chow Wagon over to the house for some serious labor negotiations.[1]
Tall Tales[]
Picture It...[]
Sophia tells her coworkers and her manager about an attractive young peasant girl who embarked on a vacation to a Crimean resort on the Black Sea. For weeks, she frolicked at the resort and enjoyed the company of many young men. When it was time for her to return to Sicily, three different suitors begged her to stay, but the girl couldn't decide who to choose. In the end, she chose none of them, but agreed to meet them at the same resort many years later. To the suitors, that night was known as "Rendevous with Sophia" -- but to the rest of the world, it was known as the Yalta Conference.
This is the first episode of The Golden Girls to be released in 1988.
One of the outfits Rebecca wears is a white shirt, brown cardigan, and plaid skirt. Dorothy is seen wearing the same outfit in "Rose Fights Back".[2]
During this episode, Blanche is upset and protective of her daughter for being in an abusive relationship. In "Bloom Is Off The Rose", Blanche finds herself in a similarly-abusive relationship and doesn't want to see it at first.[3]
Production[]
This is Meg Wyllie's second appearance in The Golden Girls.
Two of the guest stars in this episode have been in movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger: Shawn Schepps in The Terminator (1984) and Joe Regalbuto (Jeremy) in Raw Deal (1986).
Cultural references[]
In her Picture It story, Sophia references the Yalta Conference. The Yalta Conference, held from February 4th to February 11th in 1945, was the meeting of the heads of government of the United States, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union to discuss the post-World War II reorganization of Germany and Europe.
