Barbara Gets Shot is the third episode of the first season of Empty Nest and the third episode overall. Directed by Hal Cooper and written by Don Reo, it premiered on NBC-TV on October 25th, 1988.

Summary[]

After Barbara is hit by a ricochet bullet, Harry is determined to get her to quit the police force. He convinces her lieutenant to transfer her to a desk job, which infuriates Barbara even more than being shot.

Plot[]

Harry and Laverne are dealing with Jennifer, a difficult patient who screams every time they try to give her a shot. Harry dismisses Laverne after her tactics fail and manages to talk Jennifer into getting the shot by offering her a Tootsie Pop in exchange. After Jennifer gets her shot, Laverne comes back in with distressing news -- Barbara's lieutenant called and informed her that Barbara is at Fillmore Hospital after being shot during a shootout. The distraught Harry races to the hospital and scrubs into the operating room where Barbara is being operated on. After a brief back-and-forth with Barbara's surgeon, he learns that it was just a flesh wound and Barbara is going to be fine. Nevertheless, Harry tries to convince the drugged-up Barbara to find a less-dangerous line of work.

After the operation, Barbara stays with Harry while she recovers. Carol is over making roast chicken for dinner, and Harry is delighted to have both his daughters home.[1]
