Detective Al Mullins is a one-off character in The Golden Girls. He is a police detective attempting to capture the McDowells, a pair of jewel thieves.

He is portrayed by Joseph Anthony Campanella.

Capturing the McDowells[]

After the McDowell's have a dinner with the Girls, Al and Bobby knock at the door Sophia in a bad opens the door and Al tells her to ask before she opens which has her slamming the door and asking. After opening the door Blanche tries to flirt with Al when he reveals he's a detective which Bobby mistakes for a confession, they reveal that McDowells are jewel thieves and they want to stake out the girls' house. After talking the girls allow them to stay and the men only request a room, a bathroom and the kitchen as a base.

While Al is on the earphones, Sophia has been calling him names, Dorothy and him are at each others necks but Blanche suggests that it's passion, after Sophia leaves he reveals he's heard Sophia insults and doesn't mind. But when Rose reveals she's trying to help by following Mrs. McDowell around the store, as the girls argue that Rose has done nothing helpful but Al tells them that they need to stay out of it due to the danger. After Al forces, Dorothy to go out on the lanai after exchanging insults Dorothy admits that she is nuts about him.

The next day, Mrs. McDowell invites the ladies for dinner at her home. Al and Bobby, come out but thankfully Sophia pretends that they are her son and grandson. Upon hearing about the dinner, Bobby suggests that could give them a chance to plant a bug in the house which Al was reluctant but agrees. The bug works, and Al awkwardly tries to ask Dorothy out ruined by Sophia listening.

That night a deal took place, Al and Bobby went to raid them, the girls were told to hide behind the sofa after gunshots are held the girls fear the worst but Al comes in calling for backup as Bobby was hit. The next week Al reveals to Bobby and the girls that the McDowells are in jail. When everyone but Dorothy left the room Al asked her out but she declined as it hit her that his job is too risky for her to deal with which he understands.
