Al Beatty is a one-off character in The Golden Girls. He dated Rose Nylund for a month, and died in her bed from a heart attack while he spent the night. It was later revealed that Al was a chronic cheater, married to a woman named Lucille whom he'd convinced Rose was his sister, and he lived on fatty foods, which led to his heart attack.
He is portrayed by Richard Roat.
Characteristics[]
Al was a chronic cheater who liked to have relationships with multiple women. He was so infidelitous that his wife simply accepted his behavior rather than fight with him about it.
Biography[]
Background[]
Al lived in Boca Raton with his wife Lucille Beatty and their unnamed son. Al was a chronic cheater, and according to Lucille the first time he slept with someone else was on their wedding night. He slept with family, neighbors, friends, and strangers -- reportedly getting around so much that the pet rabbits Al and Lucille got for their son would look at Al in amazement. Rather than divorce him or try to stop his cheating, Lucille simply accepted his behavior. Al was reportedly a runner, but he had a terrible diet. He never ate vegetables and loved fatty foods so much that he even ate meat for dessert.[1]
A month before "In A Bed of Rose's", Al began a relationship with Rose Nylund. To keep Rose from finding our he was married, he told her that Lucille was his sister.[1]
Death[]
After a date night, Rose brought Al back to her house, allowing him to stay over so long as he was quiet. The two of them had sex that night -- but unknown to Rose, Al had a heart attack in the middle of the night and died.[1]
The now-deceased Al was found by Rose's roommate Sophia the next morning, and she told Rose, Dorothy and Blanche after she found him. After Dorothy and Sophia confirmed that Al was, in fact, dead, Rose decided to call his "sister" and personally tell her what had happened. Much to her shock, however, the sister she'd been told about was actually Al's wife. Al's death traumatized Rose and caused her to swear off sleeping with men again, as her late husband Charlie Nylund also died of a sex-induced heart attack.[1]
An autopsy later performed on Al showed that his arteries were completely clogged, which is what led to his heart attack. Lucille went to personally tell Rose the news, telling her that Al's death was imminent no matter who he'd spent the night with.[1]
Relationships[]
Lucille Beatty[]
Al's wife and later widow. According to Lucille, the first time Al slept with someone else was on their honeymoon. He slept with family, neighbors, friends, and strangers -- reportedly getting around so much that the pet rabbits Al and Lucille got for their son would look at Al in amazement. Rather than divorce him or try to stop his cheating, Lucille simply accepted his behavior.
After Rose Nylund told her about Al's death, Lucille was shocked by what had happened and didn't believe it was true.
Rose Nylund[]
The final romantic partner Al had before his death. Al's death traumatized Rose and caused her to swear off sleeping with men again, as her late husband Charlie Nylund also died of a sex-induced heart attack.[1]
Trivia[]
- This is the first time Rose dates a man named Al, the second time being in "Rose's Big Adventure".
- Strangely enough, Al never gave Rose his phone number despite dating her for a month. This may have been so that she didn't call his house and discover he was actually married.
- Realistically, Lucille would not have found out that Al was dead from Rose showing up at her hose. The police in Miami would have called the police in Boca Raton, and they would have done the house call instead.
