A Piece of Cake is the twenty-fifth episode of the second season of The Golden Girls and the fiftieth overall episode of the series. Directed by Terry Hughes and written by Barry Fanaro, Terry Grossman, Mort Nathan and Kathy Speer, it premiered on NBC-TV on May 9th, 1987.
The ladies recall other birthday celebrations while preparing a surprise birthday party for a friend. Dorothy recalls Rose taking her to a children's restaurant, Rose recalls her first birthday following her husband's death, Sophia recalls her 50th birthday in 1956, when she fought with her husband as he pointed out an error on her birth certificate that made her think she was 48, forcing Dorothy to defuse the situation, and Blanche recalls her first birthday after the girls started living together, when she used to hate celebrating her birthday until the others throw her a surprise party with all the men from her address book.
Plot[]
As the ladies prepare the hors d'oeuvres for a surprise birthday for Roberta, an elderly friend of Sophia's, they take a walk down memory lane, reminiscing about their favorite birthdays.
Sophia recalls a milestone birthday: her 50th, when she was fighting with her husband Salvadore.
Back in St. Olaf[]
Rose tells of her first birthday alone, after her husband died, when she decided to leave St.Olaf for Miami.
Surprise, Blanche![]
Blanche tells of the time when the ladies had just moved in together and threw her a surprise party, not knowing how much she hated them. It was that party that changed Blanche's mind about being surprised because they invited all the men in her little black book! Back in the present day, Blanche says, "That's the best when you're really surprised." With this, the ladies yell, "Surprise!" The story about Roberta's party was just a cover so they could really surprise Blanche and a conga line of men dances in from the lanai.[1]
Alan Blumenfeld previously appeared in the Season 1 episode "Second Motherhood" as Lou the plumber.[2]
This is the first time Lynnie Greene appears as the young Dorothy Zbornak.
Though only Sid Melton's voice is heard as Salvadore in this episode, he would play the character onscreen in six more episodes. Melton also played Don the Fool in "What a Difference a Date Makes".[3]
